A great piece. I kept thinking about Julie Kristeva's Power of Horror and how the threatened breakdown of meaning is caused by the loss of the distinction between subject and object or between self and other. Especially in the case of Violent Faculties.

Really loved this piece. Excellent examples from some seriously talented writers. Saved it to read again and again. So stoked you're here, btw! Big fan of your writing. Deliver Me was phenomenal!

Try to stay clear of it myself. But you’re a complete badass. So whatever you choose to write about, I’m there.

"rejection not just of the person or experience that is disgusting, but discomfort so thick it makes you queasy by tempting total of rejection of what nourishes the self— that is, “this made me want to vomit.” "

This was a really interesting description. Made me wonder if this latter type of disgust (not just with the person) comes from temporarily embodying that offending person's perspective/incorporating it into your own, where it doesn't fit.

oh i think so much could be written about this -- especially about mirror neurons and empathy and how all of that plays with the way we interact with others and even visualize what we read about in our minds.

I still have no idea what camembert is, but I loved this piece. I especially appreciated the discussion of tension, which persists as one of my biggest teaching points.

Loved this, Elle! Gave me a lot to think about, thank you <3 It reminds me of Tampa by Alissa Nutting (about a teacher who grooms/molests her 14-year-old student, if you haven't read it). There's nothing redeemable about the protagonist and I was sooo disgusted and uncomfortable throughout the entire book...but I sure as fuck read til the end lol. It's a wild ride, which makes it interesting!
